With a reverence for fine craft, my goal is to infuse functional objects with breath and grace, to introduce pleasure into the commonplace. I work in porcelain.
My past influences my work. My background in the Modern Dance technique of Martha Graham draws me to the strength of clean contours and the expressiveness of subtle lines. I pare down my thrown forms to essential curves – shoulder, belly, lip, foot – and fill these curves with the volume of inhaled breath, conscious that all parts share in creating a unified form. The gestural designs in the glazes surprise the viewer with an abstract dance.
The work is accessible, always functional. It asks to be held. It serves to hold a bouquet of flowers or a cup of tea, and it offers the excitement of a sensual response.
