As with many other colored pencil artists, I enjoy minutiae. I spent many years studying cryptic biology – meaning: ya gotta use a microscope. I just love detail. Nature is my inspiration, as it is for so many artists. I started working in colored pencil more than 20 years ago, but it was only a hobby that was often shoved aside for studies. Two years ago, I decided to make it my full-time job. Since then I was accepted into an International Show and received Best in Show at a local show.
Animals and flowers are my subjects. I wander my world with a camera and take photos of what I find interesting, often it is my own dog, Preston. I love doing pet portraits because I understand completely the bond between pets and their humans. One of the first real colored pencil paintings I ever did was what I called my “family portrait:” three house rabbits and one guinea pig. I also am ‘drawn’ to farm animals. I love colored pencils because they are amazingly variable depending on what paper and/or solvent you use. I normally just use them “straight” because I like the control!
